Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, there are still stigmas around HIV that keep people from getting tested. Provincial statistics indicate that more than 30 per cent of people who have HIV don’t know it.

Until very recently, testing for the antibodies to the Human Immunodeficiency Virus required a laboratory blood test, and waiting for up to 14 days for the result. A new test can now provide almost instantaneous results. A single drop of blood is taken from the patient, and the presence of antibodies to the virus, the first indication of an infection, can be determined in just 60 seconds.
The new test is just as accurate as laboratory testing, and the entire process, including pre and post-test counseling and the test itself takes approximately 20 minutes. A positive test, one that shows the presence of antibodies in the blood, requires additional blood analysis to confirm a positive HIV test result.
With the recent addition of 26 new anonymous testing sites to the previous 24 sites, it is now easier than ever to get tested in any one of the 50 anonymous testing centres across the province.
